148 Million 3D Mobile Devices by 2015 |
| |
The total number
of 3D mobile devices is forecast to surpass
148 million units in 2015, predicts new
research from In-Stat. The report says that
the tremendous size of the mobile market is
driving the industry to over the current
limitations of viewing 3D and capturing 3D.
In-Stat predicts that nearly 30 percent of
all handheld game consoles will be in 3D by
2015. By 2014, 18 percent of all tablets
will be 3D. Next year, notebook PCs will be
the first 3D-enabled mobile device to reach
1 million units. In-Stat also predicts that
3D mobile devices will increase the demand
for image sensors by 130 percent. Although
3D has been around for decades, the current
technology is new and advanced. And, as with
any new technology, adoption will increase
as the ecosystem matures, costs come down,
and the ability to capture 3D combined with
innovative mobile applications, which is
likely to be in the 2013 to 2015 timeframe. |

Global IPTV Revenues to Reach $49bn in 2015 |
| |
The global IPTV
market is expected to generate $49 billion
in 2015, with Europe and North America
accounting for the largest shares, according
to new research from the Multimedia Research
Group (MRG). In its updated IPTV Global
Forecast report, MRG predicts that the
number of global IPTV subscribers will
increase from 54 million at the end of 2011
to 113 million in 2015. The represents a
compound annual growth rate of 20.3 percent.
Service revenue from the global IPTV market
is expected to grow from $22.4 billion in
2011 to $49 billion in 2015. This means a
compound annual growth rate of 21.7 percent.
North America and Europe are forecast to
generate a larger share of the global
revenue, partially due to continued
regulatory confusion in Asia. By 2015
worldwide, at least 25 IPTV operators will
have more than 1 million subscribers, with
nine having more than 3 million; the U.S.
having two operators with more than 7.5
million each and Europe having 12 IPTV
operators with more than 1 million each. |

Switching the channel from TV to web in Asia |

Online-video
providers are scrambling to get content to
Asian Internet users, The Wall Street
Journal reports. Online video-streaming
service Hulu has announced plans to
streaming television shows and films in
Japan later this year, in the firm's first
move into a market outside the United
States. It said in a blog post that Japanese
users will have access to a large selection
of premium feature films and popular TV
shows at any time, on PCs, TVs, mobile
phones and tablets, for a monthly price.
Hulu said Japan is "an unfulfilled market
need with respect to premium feature film
and TV content" as well as lots of
high-speed Internet connections ideal for
streaming video. In China, Disney, Warner
Bros and CBS have cut deals with Chinese
video sites Youku and Sohu.com to have their
content streamed online, as all of them vie
for a piece of the world's biggest Internet
market. |

Google acquires Motorola |
| |
Google has
entered a definitive agreement to buy
Motorola Mobility for around US$ 12.5bn,
with the deal anticipated to supercharge not
only the Android ecosystem, but also
potentially give a new lease of life to
Google TV. Discussing the acquisition in a
rare blog posting, Google CEO Larry Page
states that Motorola is a market leader in
the home devices and video solutions
business, and that Google is "excited to
work together with Motorola and the industry
to support our partners and cooperate with
them" in order to accelerate innovation
during the ongoing transition to Internet
Protocol. Accordingly, the snafu Google TV
currently finds itself entangled in -
whereby pay-TV operators and broadcasters
are refusing to play ball and the
first-to-market devices are falling way
short of consumer expectations - could ease
following today's acquisition of one of the
largest pay-TV set-top box manufacturers in
the world. |

New Copa Argentina Competition feature Boca
Juniors-River Plate |
| |
Boca Juniors and
River Plate, the two giants of Argentinian
soccer, could face each other after all this
season following the launch of a new cup
competition, the Copa Argentina, which
begins later this month. Soccer fans and
television broadcasters had been bemoaning
the fact that River's shock relegation to
the second division Nacional B would deprive
the nation of the 'superclasico', the
high-profile Buenos Aires derby against
Boca, this season. The Argentinian Football
Association announced the launch of the Copa
this week, only days after shelving plans to
merge the top-tier Primera Division and the
Nacional B to create a 38-team league for
the start of the 2012-13 season. The Copa is
modelled on the Copa del Rey, the Spanish
cup competition, and will bring together 185
clubs from across Argentina. A similar cup
tournament, also called the Copa Argentina,
was previously held in 1969 and 1970. |
