The USTA has announced that the 2006 US Open purse will top $18.5 million, with the potential to exceed $21.1 million -- representing the highest annual purse in sports. Both the men’s and women’s US Open singles champions will earn $1.2 million. In addition, both US Open singles champions will receive a new Lexus GS 450h automobile. The 2006 US Open is expected to attract over 640,000 fans, making it the highest attended annual sporting event in the world. In 2005, international broadcasts reached 184 countries.

The resurgence of the game in Asia and general public interest has been heightened through players such as Paradorn Srichaphan (Thailand), Hyung-Taik Lee (Korea), Sania Mizra (India), Shuai Peng and Li Na (China). Asian tennis players are becoming a force to be reckoned with and it is poised only to improve with newer players making their way through the ranks.

The current 2006 US Open Tennis champions are Roger Federer (Men’s Singles), Maria Sharapova (Women’s Singles), Martin Damm and Leander Paes (Men’s Doubles), Nathalie Dechy and Vera Zvonera (Women’s Doubles), Martina Navratilova and Bob Bryan (Mixed Doubles).
